
Getting Heat Right in a Class 100 Glovebox
When you’re heating things inside a Class 100 glovebox, raw power isn’t the goal. The real battle is against the tiny things you can’t see—particulates and chemical gasses. See, standard heating elements have a bad habit of flaking or releasing VOCs the moment they get hot. That’s a nightmare in a cleanroom. To stop that from happening, we stick with high-purity synthetic quartz infrared lamps.
Keeping it Clean
We use fused quartz with high silica content. Why? Because it doesn’t “dust” or break down when it heats up and cools down over and over. A lot of heaters use cheap glass or metal sheaths. Those things oxidize and peel. If one of those flakes lands on a semiconductor wafer or messes with a vacuum seal, your whole batch is toast. We also chemically scrub our quartz tubes to get rid of surface ions. It basically ensures the lamp stays invisible to your environment instead of becoming a source of contamination.
The Heat and the Vacuum
The beauty of infrared is that the heat goes straight to the target. It doesn’t warm up the air inside the glovebox, which keeps everything stable. Plus, these lamps ramp up fast. The less time you spend waiting for things to heat up, the less chance there is for something to go wrong. But here’s the thing: keep an eye on your power density. High-wattage lamps are great for speed, but they put a lot of stress on your cooling system. If your heat exchanger can’t keep up with the BTUs, you’re going to see your internal pressure spike. It’s a balancing act.
Setup and the “Catch”
We use standard connectors, so these are basically drop-in replacements. You won’t have to tear apart your control cabinet and rewire everything every time a lamp burns out. We also keep the footprint small so they actually fit in those tight glovebox frames. Now, there is a catch. High-purity quartz is brittle. It’s fragile. One slip-up during installation can crack the tube, and if that happens, you’re stuck scrubbing the entire chamber before you can even think about starting production again. Seriously: use lint-free gloves. Every single time.
